What I Still Need to Know

A lot of ground was covered in the Coalition Monday Meetings. But there’s a chance we didn’t cover something you need to know, or it wasn’t covered to the extent you need.

Let’s talk about WHAT YOU STILL NEED TO KNOW to make an informed decision when the time comes. Click the comment section below to begin the conversation.

You can review the handwritten meeting notes by clicking on the meeting notes section in the menu at the right.

We need to know more about the future of health care in the USA, CA., and Sonoma County before we amend our UGB, support a hospital/Spa out on 8th Street or build a new hospital on Broadway. We know that many private hospitals in CA were sold or abandoned in California when SB1953 was passed. And the same could happen again with the Cirrus firm who has no track record in running a full-scale hospital with an ER. We do know that Marin General a district hospital that contracted with Sutter is now in the midst of a contentious divorce.

So I feel since there are so many uncertainties that the best thing we can do is the bare minimum by keeping our present hospital, regain the SPC-2 rating for the West Wing keeping it in use until 2030, adding a new modular ER similar to what the Healdsburg Hospital is doing for under 5 million and a new Central Utility Plant. Or if we cannot regain the SPC-2 rating, build a new wing and reuse the present facility for all other hospital uses that do not require OSHPD seismic standards. Since I have head the hospital architect's say" we do not know even 5 years into the future what will be happening in the health care system "it seems curious to try to plan 50 years into the future at this time. I believe we are moving toward some form of Universal Health Care model and when that happens we will have a major change in how health care is provided. Hopefully much more emphasis on Preventive Health Care and better life style habits then we presently have. This Option would buy time and I think would also get the vote of our community.

We are not going to get universal health care with Bush in office so just forget that. Bush will build hospitals in Bagdad before he puts one in Sonoma. Even if democrats were in charge, who believes there will be money to build everybody a free hosptial who wants one? Preventive Care is also just more insurance company BS for people who can't afford insurance. "You don't need insurance or hospitals -- just don't get sick!" Tell that to all the smoking, doping, lazy lard bellies at Steiners and Safeway. (This Valley runs on the BOOOZE industry in case nobody noticed!). We don't need prevention, we need a real hospital when we get sick not a bunch of trailers in the parking lot. Make the rich around here pay their fair share and we'll have more than enough for a big new hospital for everybody.

The previous writer is misinformed about Universal Health Care. It does not mean that the government will somehow "build everybody a free hospital". It refers to having the government administer health care insurance for every one(as it does with Medicare), and eliminates the middle men, the high paid insurance company CEO's. We pay twice as much for our Health Care in the US than other developed countries with universal coverage, and get worse care.

We need a more efficient way of delivering health care in this country, while at the same time increasing quality (such as Kaiser or the VA deliver). We are not going to be able to solve the country's health care crisis here in Sonoma Valley, no matter what we do. We need to be very careful how we spend tax payer dollars, and also leery of private corporations coming in to town. I agree that Health Care delivery is changing rapidly and it is impossible to predict even 5 years out what will happen.
